In addition to 19th century works, the Mathaf Gallery has a team of contemporary artists who will undertake work on a commission basis. Most of our artists have travelled extensively in the Middle East and the Gulf and are therefore familiar with their subject matter. Their love of the area and the people translates into their work.
Here we have selected six of our artists - each with their own distinctive style and speciality whose subjects range from portraits, wildlife, landscapes, architectural and maritime scenes.
It is to these artists that we now turn for today's Orientalist images. Obviously the scenery has changed from the 19th century as have the inhabitants of the Arab world, but perhaps our artists can convey some sense of the grandeur of the Islamic world and help to create a better understanding of the Orient.
