Artist Biography

George Lewis is fascinated by the juxtapositions in the Arab world; between the old and the new, the built and the natural environment. He integrates verse into his paintings, quoting from ancient Arabic sources, which help to explain and justify this transformation.

George owes much of his appreciation of the Arabic and Islamic heritage to Dr Akram Hamdan, a scholar of Arabic language and literature, with a wide range of interests in the various genres of classical and modern literary traditions, a critic and outstanding essayist. Hamdan comments 'George Lewis is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding artists who has in modern times succeeded in capturing a glimpse of the spirit of the East. His work combines in artistic form the power of suggestivenenss and strength of conviction. I have rarely met in my long experience anyone with the verve and the sensibility he displays in producing that rare phenomenon, original work'.

George has exhibited widely, particularly in the Middle East, and his work can be found in many royal and corporate collections around the world.
